Peter's Blessing

Peter was blessed in church a couple Sundays ago. It was so great to have Nana and Granddad and Aunt Lauren in town for the occasion! It was also Aunt Lauren's birthday! Of course, I didn't think to take pictures of the food or festivities after church, but here are a few shots from the day.

Peter's blessing was lovely. In it, Sam mentioned Peter's patience and his ability to be a calming influence in our family. He has already proven to be the most mellow of the four of us. What a cool little guy he is. We love having him in our family!

Here we all are at the end of the day: Nana, Sam, Peter, me, Cate, Granddad and Lauren

Next, the evolution of a kiss:

Mmmmwwwaaaaah!

What's next?

And here's one from the weekend that I just love:
Just look at those happy cherubs and their proud Granddad!

On Choosing Your Battles

Admittedly, I can be pretty intense with Cate. She goes to a quiet room by herself, not the foyer to play, when she misbehaves at church. She sits in a regular chair, not a high chair, at restaurants. And, until recently, she didn't sleep with anything because I didn't want her to need a crutch to fall asleep.

I'm big in to her doing what she can for herself, which at this point includes being in charge of putting the dish towels away, getting her own dishes for meals, putting her used dishes in the sink, wiping off the table after dinner, putting her clothes away in drawers, emptying the trash from her room, bringing the brush and dustpan when I'm sweeping, and keeping track of her own shoes. More recently, she's learned to Swiffer (seriously, I showed her once and she did the whole front room!) and she's taken on a whole host of chores on Peter's behalf, including pacifier monitor, bottle picker-upper, and post-burp face wiper (not to mention chief entertainer).

But for a whole variety of reasons my own childhood was essentially void of whimsy, and I'm determined that will not be the case for Cate and Peter. We dance almost every day. We clap and squeal when the postman delivers our mail (Cate gets all the window envelopes and advertisements, her "paperwork"). We make silly faces. I can hardly wait till Cate understands sprinkles so that we can put them on everything. I've got big plans for finger painting with pudding and popping popcorn in the middle of the room with the air popper lid off and eating dessert first sometimes. And for a surprise hookey day during the school year when they each get to skip school and have their own all-day fun-packed date with Mom and Dad. We're big in to applause and giggles and high fives and tickles and hiding and chase.

And ... I let her spill her water pretty much wherever she wants. It's just water. We live in Houston, where it's always hot. We only have carpet in one room, and a tiny bit of water isn't going to hurt the carpet. When she spills it on linoleum or hard wood, she immediately gets a towel and cleans it up herself. I can't resist her squeals of delight when she pours it on her head. It's so cute when she splashes her hands in her tiny indoor puddles. And for all my intensity, in those moments when we are both splashing our hands in that tiny bit of water on the floor, I get to be my low-key Cool Mom alter ego. We both think this is great fun.

I had never given any thought at all to how this might play ... at someone else's house ... or with another toddler over. Until today. When I had a mom friend and her toddler over and I gave each of the girls about a three tablespoons of water in matching cups and Cate spilled a little. "Eh, you choose your battles, and that's not one I fight..." I said cheerfully, showing as much low-key, go-with-the-flow Cool Mom aloofness as I could muster. My low-key Cool Mom friend shrugged and smiled and I thought how nice that were both so totally, you know, Cool. And then Cate got the look of anticipatory delight she gets on her face every time just before she dumps the water all over herself. And then she dumped it. "Whoa," my low-key Cool Mom friend said, "that was totally deliberate, wilful spilling!" "And," she said, turning to her own 20-month-old, "We are not going to copy that, are we?"

Uh, low-key Cool Mom fail.

But here's the thing: I'm pretty sure one of the purposes of parents is to give the next generation something to stay up late talking with college roommates about, or to pass the time chatting about on a long road trip with a future spouse, or to pay a therapist $150 an hour to listen to sometime in their late 20s when self awareness and discretionary income hit their first peak simultaneously.

And for all the stuff we'll undoubtedly give her to talk about, there's one thing my Cate won't be saying: "I wish my mom had let me have a little fun. You know, I just wish she would have let me spill some water on the floor and play in it every now and then!" Not on my watch.

Sleepy Head

Bless his heart, Peter has made the transition from one little monkey to two as easy as it could possibly be. Cate gets some credit, too, because she has been such a sweetie with him. But mostly Peter eats and sleeps. He wakes up for a couple hours in between and when he does his little eyes are wide open while he looks around checking us out. I never seem to have the camera around when he's awake, but isn't he cute when he's asleep:

Sam's mom made me promise I'd never let Sam sleep with our babes unattended. So I don't. But why would I go anywhere else when I can see this adorable sight:

Sunday nap time.

And speaking of not having the camera around (which I was, a minute ago) today I missed the best photo op ever. I introduced Cate to the movie Annie. And oh boy, was that fun. She insisted on holding Peter while we watched. And, no joke, my little Cate held him (without hitting him, pulling his hair, or flailing him off her lap) for about half an hour! And he was snug as a bug, awake the whole time, just sitting there in her arms. Every few minutes Cate would look at me adoringly, then smoosh her little face against Peter's for one of her signature loud, wet kisses. Peter would wince, collect himself, and snuggle back in to her arms. Gosh, I love those two. Maybe next time I'll get the camera before we get cozy. I just couldn't stop watching them (and didn't dare leave them unattended--ack! I'm not that confident in C yet!) long enough to get the camera.

A Date with Cate

The Monday after Peter was born, Sam and I took Cate out on a Big Sister Date while my mom stayed home with Peter. We all had so much fun!

The highlight for me was the poor teenage boy pushing samples of Akido-somebody-or-other's Japanese food in the food court who, when I said, "No, thank you," responded with, "Are you sure? Baby wants some!" In the next moment, that boy learned an important lesson that I hope will stick with him throughout life. The moment came after nary a second's confused pause when I laughed and said, "Oh, no! There's no baby in there! I just had a baby ... on Friday!" I didn't know presumably healthy young people could turn that shade of purple. Poor kid.

But, alas, I digress ...

Here are some pics of all the fun things we did with our Cate!

The Merry-go-Round

(Weird face, but let's be honest: I look sort of close to normal size here. Can't pass up an opportunity to post that to the world wide interweb, right?)

(Shoot, my cover is blown.)

Ice cream!

New shoes!

First Big Girl Haircut!

Cruising in the Monstermobile Stroller!

What a day! Oh, and that hat she's sporting was a present Sam picked up for her when we stopped at Target on our way out for our date. What a lucky girl she is to have a Daddy who just couldn't resist that pink flowered hat for his girl!

Grandma and Peter had a fine afternoon without us:

P.S.
In case you read this and thought, "What? Didn't she say this was Monday? And didn't she have Peter on Friday?" please let me clarify. And please don't be too impressed. Both when I had Cate and when I had Peter, I felt 99% back to myself within about 12 hours of delivering them. I wasn't powering through anything or being all-around awesome here. I was just getting on with things, because by Monday I'd honestly been feeling fine for two and a half days. It's a blessing that (almost) makes up for TWO 21-hour labors (and by "labor" I'm talking contractions-every-three-minutes-or-less LABOR). So really, I wasn't being any kind of martyr here. In fact, I don't think I'd even taken any Advil.

"Everyone Said I Looked Like ... "

There's a place in both Cate and Peter's baby books that says, "Everyone said I looked like _______" and when Cate was born there was no question the answer was, "DADDY!" (These days people seem to see a little more of me in her, but not at the beginning!)

So along Peter comes and he hadn't been here for two minutes before Sam and I were just staring at him marveling at how much he looks like CATE! Not one person has commented on him looking like either Sam or me. It's a genetic marvel, but I don't think anyone will ever doubt these two are siblings.

Here are a few pics of each of them to compare:

I promise there really are two of them:

Welcome, Peter Michael Major!

Peter's here and we couldn't be more thrilled about it! He arrived at 1:01 PM on Friday, June 29. He weighed 8 lbs. 11 oz., and was 21.25 in. long, making him the bruiser of the well baby nursery. Except for the one 10+ pounder.

He is the sweetest little guy and we basically haven't heard a cry from him since about a minute after he was born. He eats, wakes up, hangs out for a while, dozes off, wakes up, eats, repeats. He's so content when he's awake, just looking around checking us out.

Cate has been so great with him! She loves to give him kisses and will occasionally just stop whatever she's doing to go to whoever is holding him to ask to kiss him. Mealtime has turned in to a two bites, one kiss, two bites routine. Only two hair pulling incidents and one mysterious scratch on Peter's arm that none of us saw her do. One meltdown for both Cate and me the first time I fed Peter in front of her and she started crying. Then I started crying. It was all just so sad. But Sam swept in, got C's little boy baby doll (she named him Joe) and a bottle, pulled her in to his lap and before we knew it we were feeding and burping our babies together. She got the hang of it within about five minutes and we were good to go. Then tonight as I was snuggling her before bed and whispering to her about how much I love her she fell asleep in my arms for the first time in ages and all I could think was that she really isn't that big of a big girl yet. I'm truly overwhelmed by the blessing of having two little babes to love.

Here are a few photos of Peter in the hospital:

And a few from since we've been home:

And some not-to-be-missed shots of Cate's visits to us in the hospital:

I packed Cate's favorite book, Squeak, in my hospital bag so that we could read it when she came to visit. Wasn't it nice of her to bring me her hat to wear?

Cate really enjoyed that post-partum water bottle that's as big as she is.

We're working on uploading a video of Cate meeting Peter but after several attempts we're bagging it for now. Keep checking back and we'll see what we can do.
